5 Can’t-Miss Drives for Fall Foliage

When summer came to an end, we had no choice but to part ways with the long days and warmth of the sunshine. But for those who may be grieving the loss of sunny road trips to the beach, remember there are elements to anticipate in every season and fall is certainly no different. So instead of setting your sights on a sandy destination, this fall, make your road trip all about a breathtaking journey. Take some inspiration from these top 5 foliage drives in Canada.

1.Bruce Peninsula, Ontario

Located on the waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, this area is home to some of the most vibrant foliage in Ontario. Visitors can take advantage of the picturesque fiery hues of transforming deciduous trees, while appreciating the contrast of rich greens in surrounding conifers. In the county, visitors can take a scenic drive down rural highways that offer a premium view of the seasonal wonder. Or for those who prefer immersing themselves in the heart of the transformation, 864 kilometres of pristine hiking trails await!

2. Heritage Roads, Prince Edward Island

Perhaps one of the most storied locations in Canada, PEI is home to a treasure trove of marvellous driving routes for those looking to witness breathtaking autumnal scenery. The island boasts 11 Designated Scenic Heritage Roads, not to mention six other roads with historic and aesthetic significance. These red clay roads guide travellers on journeys featuring eclipsing treetop canopies, panoramic views of the countryside and even relics of a time long forgotten.

3.The Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia

Internationally recognized as one of the most beautiful drives in the world, the Cabot Trail borders the Atlantic Ocean, presenting an astonishing perspective of the coastline and the waterfront. On route, travellers will have the opportunity to enjoy nature’s palette of red, orange, yellow and crimson, while witnessing the diverse wildlife that call the area home.

4. Icefields Parkway, Alberta

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, this pristine roadway connects Jasper, Alberta to Lake Louise and other popular locations in the province. Visitors will immediately notice the rolling hills as the roadway ebbs and flows with the changing elevation of the mountains. Around each turn, a new and spectacular view of mountainside and foliage presents itself to onlookers, making this one of the most engaging journeys to experience. Keep in mind, winter driving conditions can be more prevalent at higher elevations, so be sure to take necessary precautions for a safe trip.

 5. Algonquin Park, Ontario

This 7,725-square-kilometre attraction is the pinnacle of parks in Ontario. Only a three-hour drive from Toronto, foliage-faring travellers will delight at the beautiful colours along Highway 60, which runs through the heart of the park. Enjoy the vibrant hues of maples, red oaks, hemlock and other deciduous trees native to the park. For those living near Algonquin, this is a must-see attraction!
