The First Long Weekend of the Year Means It’s Road Trip Time
Drivers are planning their first road trip. Keeping everyone safe on the road should be a concern for all drivers. Eliminating distracted driving is key to road safety. Young Drivers of Canada suggests the following tips to keep everyone safe this long holiday weekend.
Road Trip Driving Tips
1. Avoid distracted driving behaviour. Before you even leave the home make sure that you have had your coffee and eaten your meal. Make sure the kids have their snacks and entertainment packed in reach, so the driver does not have to assist in the access to those items. If you are travelling to an unfamiliar destination, ensure your GPS is programmed before you start your trip. Think of any other things that you would usually reach for while driving such as a purse or sunglasses. Make sure they are next to you, so you don’t have to look for these items while driving.
2. Turn off your phone. Avoid the temptation and turn off your phone. If you are meeting people, let them know your travel plans and advise them that you will not be answering the phone until you arrive at a rest stop.
3. Avoid driving at night. Driving at night has its challenges. In addition to being tired, drivers have to deal wildlife activity when driving at night. Objects are harder to see at night and glare from oncoming vehicle lights can affect your driving. Statistics show that there are more collisions at night, even with reduced traffic.
4. Ensure your vehicle is serviced before you begin your journey. There is nothing worse than being stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere with fusing family and kids.
5. Pack an emergency kit. Include non-perishable items such as granola bars, flares, extra blankets, water and even an extra charged cellphone that can be used in the event of an emergency.
The first long weekend of the year is a time to have fun and enjoy the beginning of the spring season. Don’t let distracted driving spoil that fun!
